Home \ Making an Old Tradition New- The Bouquet Toss

By: Rebecca Richman
I love exploring the history of traditions and customs involved in various wedding ceremonies and celebrations. The history of the bouquet toss I found to be very amusing. The tradition of tossing your bouquet to your single female guests dates back to the 14th century. It was considered luck to get as close as you can to the bride and to touch the bride’s dress. It was said to have gotten so out of hand that people were literally tearing pieces of the bride’s dress. In an effort to preserve their dresses, brides chose to toss their bouquets to their guests so there wouldn’t be a rush of people trying to get to the bride and her dress.
How interesting right? I love when brides want a traditional wedding and it’s also fun to find ways to make an old tradition new. Maria and Al were married at the Ritz Carlton this past November and Maria decided that she didn’t want to do a traditional bouquet toss. She decided to select two women who were close to her and were a big part of her life and she chose to split a bouquet and give them both half of the bouquet. She called them up to the dance floor and said a few words to the both of them and it truly was a very special moment.
In what ways are you making an old tradition new?
In 2011, we had a few of our brides hand out their bouquets in fun new ways. One bride choose to do a raffle for the bouquet. Another had twelve single roses and tossed them so twelve guests received flowers. But my favorite was a bride had all the single girls give one reason for awarding them the bouquet and she picked her favorite. Very creative!
