Sweet!

Monday, September 6th, 2010

This weekend our couple Ellen and Kris chose to send their guests home with a sweet treat….

AMAZING chocolates from local Philadelphia chocolatier John and Kira’s – when we introduced them to the chocolates they fell in love with them….

{they actually did a beautiful black box with a white ribbon and Ellen and Kris’s custom monogram for us}

I first met owner John Doyle at a Bridal Event almost a decade ago when we were both first starting out…. they had such a beautiful, rich, local product and a really interesting story -

I’ve become addicted….I brought home a sample box when I picked up the favors and couldn’t stop……they’re creamy fillings with such a POP of flavor - mint grown by a local elementary school, lemongrass and ginger are among my favorites….

Not only are these chocolates AMAZING, the company local and supporting local farmers, the owners and staff friendly, helpful and really nice…..

BUT, their weddings favors are competitively priced with the big national companies who mass produce the chocolates…..they offer a wide selection of boxes, ribbons wax seals and labels.

In addition to their chocolate squares they offer toffee (almond, pistachio and hazelnut), chocolate cherries (dried, dark-red, tart cherries and dark chocolate), fruit squares, chocolate figs (with whiskey ganache) and…….

 The cutest  bumble bees (caramel chocolate) and lady bugs (mint, raspberry and honey lavender) …. perfect to accent a spring or summer wedding theme

YUMMMMMMMMMMMM!

John and Kira’s and The Queen of Hearts Wedding Consultants are both proud members of the Philadelphia Sustainable Business Network…

We’re NUTS!

Tuesday, May 4th, 2010

{well, ya, we ARE a little crazy busy… but that’s NOT what we’re talking about}

We’re NUTS OVER TOFFEE….yup, that’s the name of the company too!

I met this great woman named Sara Scarborough on Face Book; she’s from Gulf Breeze, Florida and is the owner of a great new company called NUTS OVER TOFFEE!

Nuts Over Toffee is a delicious, buttery handmade confection which is carefully created one batch at a time, using only the freshest ingredients.

They use Sugar, Pure Butter, Chocolate, Pecans, Corn Syrup, and Vanilla. Dried Cranberries have been added to their Holiday flavor…Dark Chocolate Cranberry.

They make great wedding favors…

Come in smaller bags you can use in gift bags for out of town guests…

Or, in bulk bags if you are doing a dessert station or a gourmet chocolate buffet

Sara sent us a few samples to review…I took the small bag (I’m a white chocolate junkie) and passed the larger gift boxes on to our two team members who are brides-to-be…

We all agree – they are amazing, definitely something your guests will not leave sitting on the table at the end of the night…

You can check out Nuts Over Toffee on the internet at: www.nutsovertoffee.com or contact Sara directly at: 580-293-3384

Sweet Ideas…

Karen-small By Karen Peterkin

With Valentine’s Day right around the corner I’m being inundated with ’sweet treat’ catalogs in the mail.

 The latest catalog got me thinking about wedding favors, and two elements of wedding favors in particular:  the presentation and the scrumptious nature of chocolate/sweet favors.

We at The Queen of Hearts Wedding Consultants are huge fans of edible favors:  Mark has said it time and time again- we usually don’t clean up extra edible favors at the end of the reception.  The guests gobble them up!  Guests appreciate sweet treats at the end of the night.

And with the packaging of chocolates, truffles, or baked goodies, there are so many options for beautifully presented favors…  boxes, ribbons, favor tags, use of monograms, incorporating the wedding’s colors.

The catalog of course shows how lovely their options can be displayed and presented, but we also love to shop locally and support the small businesses that we know and love in the Philadelphia area.

You can have beautifully presented favors while supporting local shops as well.

I’ve been WHIPPED…

Thursday, February 4th, 2010

Life as a wedding planner is tough…

Especially this time of year in Philadelphia, everyone wants to show you their new products, venues and there’s lots of networking going on….

NOT the time to be trying to diet….

So a week ago when the email came – “What is a good day to drop off a box of cupcakes?”  I wanted to jump for joy, but knew an entire box of cupcakes would kill my diet….

Especially since the were from Zoë Lukas of Whipped Bakeshop….

So we set up a meeting at her bakeshop – figuring I could check out her studio {being a former chef I love to check out behind the scenes for clients}, I could sample and not  be tempted to eat an entire box of the tasty treats.

Zoë was too, too cool and set up a small tasting plate with sample cupcakes representing various cake, filling and frosting styles and flavors…{I was good and did a slice off each to taste them}….even when it came to my favorite RED VELVET {YUM!}

I was really intrigued by a display of Valentine’s Day cookies featuring some fun, retro, Victorian Valentine’s Day cards done with an edible screen printing…. {hey, I’m the Queen of Hearts, Valentine’s Day’s my day!}

I really enjoyed their work, they make great favors for weddings…. and they also showed me some of the beautiful weddings cakes they’ve done…

I got to spend time learning about her background and that not only has she worked for several of the top bakeries in the city before venturing out on her own..

BUT while working at one of those places she actually did one of my FAVORITE entries in Let them Eat Cake….A really YUMMY, lemon curd and coconut cake…

Thanks Zoë – it was great tasting your work and finally getting to meet you

Attention cookie and candy bars fans!

Check out these very versatile jars…

chalkboard jars

Firstly, they are very affordable and available at Pier 1.

Secondly, they are reusable after your event- just find a use for them in your own kitchen!

Lastly, think of all of the yummy treats and goodies that they could hold:  biscotti, cookies, lollipops, candies, homemade treats…the list could go on an on.

And how adorable that you can actually write on them with chalk?
